Clean and pulled back in a simple ponytail is the “dressiest” look for long hair on a guy. A trim to even out the ends right beforehand doesn’t hurt, either.

Well what if you are 14 and you have long hair but need to dress nice for the wedding? Any suggestions?

That’s definitely unusual — usually if someone sends a “black tie optional” invitation it’s because the host plans on wearing a tux but doesn’t want to require his guests to do the same. I don’t think I’ve ever run into someone sending “black tie optional” invites and then exercising the “optional” part himself before!

Sometimes the invitation is not enough. I once got a wedding invitation that said “black tie optional” which, to me, means “wear a tuxedo if you own one”. The cermony was scheduled for 5pm, so I figure everything was fine and wore my tux. But when I got to the wedding the groom was wearing a suit! Awkward. From then on I always set the invitation aside and call. Thanks for the tips.
