Local kids embrace photography

The Warehouse Gallery is not only a showcase for new artists. This is also a safe place for creative expression for several students in Syracuse City School District.

the PAL project director Stephen Mahan told that The Photography and Literacy Project works as a path for inner city students to talk about their stories via digital media and build self esteem. He told that in Syracuse city school systems there are more than seventy seven languages spoken. Therefore, a whole lot of kids have trouble with English. They provide them with a scope to express themselves otherwise, and build self-esteem through that.

The program offers kids with state-of-the-art cameras and computers, and teaches them the way to use software like Photoshop. Syracuse University’s student mentors travel to The Warehouse or even visit the children in the city classrooms, where they help the kids to become familiar with the programs as well as maneuver the equipment.

People’s Equal Action and Community Effort’s human service coordinator Lori Covington introduced some kids whom she mentors to PAL project and three of them became engrossed in the program. Covington told that when the work of these kids is displayed community wide, it is a powerful moment for them; in fact, it is more than powerful, it is empowering.
